Fly Fishing the Tuckasegee River Delayed Harvest

Posted by on March 8, 2012

Jadon all smiles after landing a nice rainbow.

Today, was an excellent day of fly fishing on the Tuckasegee River with my son Jadon.  Nothing brings a smile to my face quicker than seeing my son’s excitement when he hooks into a nice trout.  Today was definitely filled with plenty of smiles and great memories for us both.  At only seven years of age, Jadon has caught more fish on the fly than I had by age 16.  He surprises me more and more with each outing.

After being beat to one of my big fish honey holes by another angler we decided to fish near the top section of the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest on South River Rd.  I decided to tie on a dry fly dropper rig with a #14 Para Adams and a #16 Just Add Water and Jadon went with a #8 Hot Head Marvin (Black and Olive).  I quickly landed 5-6 fish on the Para Adams and several fish on the Just Add Water while Jadon hooked into several fish with the Hot Head Marvin.

I decided to spend the last hour of the trip taking photos and videos of Jadon landing fish after fish after fish.  With the Tuckasegee River getting a recent stocking of close to 10,000 fish the fishing has been extremely hot.

The river has been very wader friendly for the past week or so with the flows from the generation reaching the delayed harvest section after 3pm.  Look for that to possilby change if we have any significant rain from this next storm system coming in tonight and tomorrow morning.  You can visit the Duke Energy website or click the link provided on our home page.
