Guided Fly Fishing on the Tuckasegee River

Posted by on September 6, 2014

Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service offers both wade and float trips on many sections of the Tuckasegee River.  Our fly shop is conveniently located to this river and is only a couple of minutes drive from the famous Delayed Harvest Section.  This section of the river is catch and release from Oct. 1st to the first Sat. in June and restricted to single hook artificial only.  During the stocking months of Oct., Nov., Mar., Apr., and May the state stocks almost 10,000 fish per stocking.  By the May stocking this section of river has approximately 10,000 fish per mile making it one of the most productive streams in the country.

This section of river is very wader friendly as long as you pay close attention to the release schedules of the East and West Fork.  The east is the bigger of the two releases and it still allows access to wading in a few areas.  The west is smaller and is usually stays low enough to wade.  Float trips can be done on any of these release or zero release days unless we are in a severe drought.

The Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest Section will receive the October stocking on the 2nd and 3rd this year and the November stocking on the 4th and 5th.  After these stockings anglers will find some of the best fly fishing in the Southeast.  Although they are not stocked, the winter months, will also stay extremely productive.

Many large Northern Brook Trout are pulled out of these waters.

During the summer months our guides target the lower Tuckasegee River for smallmouth bass, spotted bass, trout and walleye.  The Tuckasegee River offers something for everyone from first time fly fishers to the most experienced anglers.  Spin fishing trips are welcome in most areas that we guide.

If you are looking for friendly, patient and knowledgeable guides then book your next fly fishing adventure with us.  While some guide services boast that they have the “highest number of trips” or “most trips ever” on certain rivers we base our success on the high number of repeat customers we have that come back year after year to fish with us.

Fly fishing with kids is one of the most rewarding aspects of guiding.
