This past week we got to share one of our favorite streams in the Smokies, Hazel Creek, with several new clients. On Wednesday and Thursday Hookers Fly Shop guide, Jalen Morton and myself guided beginner fly fisherman Charles W. for an overnight trip to Hazel Creek.
Despite being in the 20s overnight the weather was great and the fishing was really good. Charles quickly picked up on the fly fishing basics. We covered casting and the importance of presentation and the benefits of being stealthy on these mountain streams. Charles quickly put his first Smoky Mountain Brown Trout in the net and went on to catch several more nice browns and rainbows. Charles is planning four to five more overnight trips over the next year or so with some of his clients. We look forward to our next trip with Charles in June.
On Saturday and Sunday, Hookers Fly Shop guide Miller Watson and I guided father and son, Paul and Avery from Ohio. The weather was really bad the first day but we managed to get a beautiful lake run brown in the net. The second day was much better as far as the weather but the fishing was still slower than earlier in the week. 12 year old Avery put a nice lake run brown and a beautiful brown trout in the net. Overall a fantastic fews days spent in one of the most beautiful places in the Smokies.
