Fly Fishing Trips on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail

Alford fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

It has been a week for us here at Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service.  Clint and I have both been out on several trips this week on various sections of the WNC Fly Fishing Trail and surrounding areas.  On Sunday, I guided repeat client Alford A. from New Jersey on Straight Fork inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Alford  had some nice action on top water with several fish rising to a #14 Yellow PMX.

On Tuesday, Clint fished with a couple of beginner anglers from Sylva.  Clint reports that each client caught a handful of fish each on a section of upper Scott Creek .  I was also out exploring the WNC Fly Fishing Trail with Glen C. from the South Carolina Sportsman Magazine.  Glen was here to do a story on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail for the North Carolina Sportsman Magazine.  On the first day we spent some time on Raven Fork, Scott Creek, Tuckasesgee Delayed Harvest, Savannah Creek and the Tuckasegee below Dillsboro.   On day two we floated a section of the Tuckasegee below Dillsboro.  We caught some nice trout, red eye bass and smallmouth.  Pictured above is a nice smallie that Glen brought to the boat.  Clint was also out on a half day trip with a repeat client from earlier this spring.

Mull Creek Rainbow

Today, I guided repeat client Jeff B. from Sylva and his cousin Mike from Pennsylvania.  We fished on upper Caney Fork on Mull and Rough Butt Creeks.  Jeff and Mike caught some nice wild brookies and wild rainbows.  Jeff hooked into the big fish of the day on Rough Butt but we couldn’t get it into the net.  It looked like a 13-14″ Rainbow.  Hot flies of the day were #14 Yellow PMX with a #16 Copper John Dropper.

Jadon fighting a nice Tuckasegee Rainbow

On Tuesday I was also able to get out on the river with my son Jadon.  We floated a section of the upper Tuck just below WCU.  We had some decent success with a Hot Head Marvin with an Inchworm Dropper.  We caught some nice rainbows and one decent brown as well as a couple of smallies.

Looking forward to a busy day tomorrow with a morning and afternoon trips on the schedule.  If you are interested in booking with us please call or email.  828-587-HOOK   hookersflyshop@yahoo.com

Guided Smallmouth Trips on the Tuckasegee River

Nice Tuckasegee Smallmouth

Today, Tim and I guided a great group of guys on a smallmouth float trip on the upper Tuckasegee River.  We were going to float the Dillsboro to Barkers Creek section but the thunderstorms the night  before dumped a lot of rain, which muddied up the lower sections of the Tuck.  We decided to put in below the Cullowhee dam and float to the Delayed Harvest put in on South River Road.  Frank, Stan, Joe and Wayne caught several nice smallies and plenty of rainbow, brook and brown trout as well.  Many fish were taken on orange, olive and yellow (perch) clouser minnows and hot head marvins.  Joe brought several trout to the boat that were in the 17-18″ range.  Stan landed some nice smallies on the clouser minnow but the big smallie of the day came on a dark brown hot head marvin.  He also ended the day with a grand slam.  Wayne and Frank brought some nice trout and smallies to the boat as well.  This was my second time guided Frank and Stan.  Last year they did a trip with us on the Upper Nantahala and had a spectacular day on the water.  I look forward to guiding these guys again this fall or next spring.

Guided Smallmouth Trips in Western North Carolina

Dale with a nice Tuckasegee Smallie

We have been floating for smallmouth bass for the past few days.  A couple of days ago I had the pleasure of guiding repeat client Dale L. from California on the Lower Tuckasegee near Bryson City.  While it was a fairly slow day on the water we couldn’t have asked for better weather.  Dale landed 5 or 6 smallies including the nice one pictured above.  Hot flies were #6 white and fire tiger wiggle minnows and #4 Olive Leadeye Buggers.  Hookers Fly Shop guide Clint Holcomb also had a smallie float on this section and reported a slow day as well.

The next day was a different story.  I decided to hit the section between Dillsboro and Whittier.  Dean and Mozell from Plant City, Fl brought over 20 trout and over a dozen smallies to the boat. Mozell caught several large rainbows in the 16-18″ range and several decent brook trout and one nice wild brown.

Guided Fly Fishing in Western North Carolina

It has been a busy week here at Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service.  All of our guides have been on the water all week.  Cris Weatherford, Clint Holcomb, Tim Sheehan and I have been guiding all over Western North Carolina.  We have had wade and float trips on the Tuckasegee and several wade trips on the Nantahala, West Fork of the Pigeon, Caney Fork/Piney Mtn/Rough Butt and the Cherokee Tribal Waters.

On Monday, I had the pleasure of guiding a great group of anglers on the West Fork of the Pigeon.  The day was decent with several rainbows and brookies brought to the net.  Mallory even had a close encounter with a large water snake that swam right between her legs.  Hot flies were #8 Olive Polar Flash Buggers with a #10 B.H. Prince Nymph trailer.  Overall fantastic day on the water.

Fly Fishing the Nantahala River

On Tuesday, I guided local TU member Jerry D. from Sylva, NC on the Lower Nantahala River.  The day started out with a bang with a 16″ Brown trout taken on a #8 Hot Head Brown Marvin.  Jerry landed several decent wild rainbows around Patton’s Run and a few more nice trout about a mile above the NOC.  Hot flies of the day were #12 Quasimodo Pheasant Tails, #8 Brown Hot Head Marvins and #6 UV Dubbed Bottom Rollers.  Clint also had a float trip on the Tuck DH and reports over 30 fish brought to the net.

Ed with a nice Wild Rainbow on Piney Mtn. Creek

Yesterday, I guided repeat client and good friend Ed F. from Fayetteville, NC.  This was Ed’s 6th or 7th trip with me and this time he wanted to try something new.  He wanted to fish some of the smaller streams on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail.  We decided to fish upper Caney Fork and Piney Mtn Creek.   Ed had a fantastic day on the water.  He landed over 30 fish including a 12-13″ wild rainbow and a 9-10″ Wild Brookie.  The hot fly setup of the day was a #14 Yellow Caddis with a #18 B.H. Copper John dropper.  About 3/4 of the fish were on the Caddis.  Guiding Ed is always a pleasure.

Today, I guided Chris N. from Nashville, TN on the West Fork of the Pigeon.  Chris landed over 20 fish mostly brook trout and a handful of rainbows and one brown giving him the grand slam for the day.  Most of the fish were taken on a #8 Olive Bugger with a #10 B.H. Prince Nymph trailer.

Guided Backcountry Trips in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Hazel Creek Backcountry Campsite

Last week I had the pleasure of guiding father and son duo, Tad and Dave Y. from Virginia.  We spent two days of fly fishing and camping in the backcountry on Hazel Creek.  Located on the North Shore of Fontana Lake, Hazel Creek is one of the larger streams located inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

As a child and teenager I spent many days  years hiking, camping and fishing up and down the Hazel Creek trail from Proctor to the Upper Cascades above Calhoun.  This area of the Smokies was one of my grandfather’s favorite places to camp and fish and he would bring me there often, throughout the year.

Tad, Dave and I arrived to Proctor around mid morning on Tuesday.  We quickly setup camp and hit the stream for a day of fly fishing.  We made our way up to the Lower Cascades area, about a mile or so above the Proctor camp site.  Soon after Tad and Dave hit the stream, the skies opened up and we had about a half hour downpour that quickly turned the stream into what looked like chocolate milk.  They threw some large stonefly patterns with no luck.   We decided to head back to camp and fish the area around the Calhoun House across from the Proctor campsite.  Here Tad hooked into a nice 12-13″ rainbow but we couldn’t get him in the net.  By this time there was a steady hatch of Yellow Stoneflies and Tad had several decent strikes on a Little Yellow Sally.

The second day proved to be more productive with much better weather.  We headed back up to the Lower Cascades area and Tad quickly put several browns and rainbows in the net.  Most fish were taken on a #14 Para Adams and #14 Light Cahills.  After a decent day of fishing we headed back down to Proctor to breakdown camp and meet the boat for the trip back across the lake.

Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest Guided Trips

Don with a nice Tuckasegee trout

Saturday, I had the pleasure of guiding a 3/4 day wade trip for Don Tomas the President of Southwestern Community College.  We could not have asked for  better weather with highs in the mid 70s and partly cloudy skies.  We fished the middle and lower sections of North River Rd. on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  On the middle section Don brought 12-13 rainbow and brook trout to the net.  Most fish were taken on a #8 Olive/Black Hot Head Marvin with several fish taken on a #14 Rainbow Warrior dropper.   Don also picked up several 15-16″ Rainbows on a #8 Olive Lead-Eye Bugger.

Around lunch time we decided to drive on down to the lower section on North River Rd.  There were a few more anglers there but it wasn’t overcrowded like the South River Rd. section was.  There, Don picked up 12-13 more rainbow and brook trout and one wild brown completing the Tuckasegee Grand Slam for the day.  Almost all fish came on the Hot Head Marvin and a couple of fish were taken on the Rainbow Warrior.  Overall fantastic day on the water with some great company.   I look forward to fishing with Don again for Smallmouth later on in the summer.

This week is shaping up to be a busy week with Clint, Tim, Cris and myself out on the water with trips.  We have several wade and float trips and one backcountry trip into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park already booked.

Spring Fly Fishing in Western North Carolina

We have experienced some excellent fishing over the past few weeks here in Western North Carolina.  The Tuckasegee River, West Fork of the Pigeon, Cherokee, Nanathala and the Smokies have been producing some nice fish on our guided trips.  The river levels are great and there have been plenty of bugs hatching.  Over the past few days we have seen plenty Light Cahills and Little Yellow Stones as well as plenty of hungry trout eager to rise up and pick them off the surface.

Early in the week I had the pleasure of guiding Scott and Chris on a half day on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  Scott probably brought close to 20 fish to the net including several nice rainbows in the 14-16″ range and several brookies.  Chris also did really well and even picked up a few on dry flies.   Little Yellow Stones were hatching so we tied on a #14 Goldie Hawn that produded several rainbows.

Nice fish Scott!

This past Wednesday and Thursday I had a some folks out on a two day float on the Tuckasegee River Delayed Harvest.  The first day produced some decent fish but there was also plenty of rain, and by 2pm the river was extremely high and muddy.  The second day was a bit better and produced plenty of rainbow, brook and brown trout.  Mr. Heller from Myrtle Beach and grand daughter both got the grand slam for the day.

Nice trout on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest

On Friday morning I had a half day beginner trip on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest section.  The upper section along South River Rd. was fairly crowded, so we decided to fish the middle section along North River Road.  Mr. Borchelt and son from Atlanta, Ga. caught plenty of brookies and rainbows and one smallmouth bass.

Later on that afternoon, fellow guide Logan Needham and I guided some fine folks from Atlanta on the Cherokee Trophy Waters.  While this section of river can produce some hefty sized trout, you often will not find the numbers you would find on Nantahala or the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest sections.  Several fish in the 15-16 inch range were brought to the net, but the big fish didn’t seem very interested in what we had to offer.  Michael had one fish in the 20-21″ range come up and swallow his hopper off the surface but it quickly spit the hook.

Michael, Drew and Garrett getting ready to hit the Cherokee Trophy Section

The past two days I’ve had the pleasure of guiding repeat client Dan C. from Atlanta, Ga.  On Saturday we did a smallmouth float on the lower Tuckasegee River.  There are some extremely productive sections on the lower section and it is almost guaranteed that you will not run into any other anglers.  Dan quickly got into some nice bass.

Dan with a nice smallmouth on the Lower Tuckasegee

The cool thing about this section of river is you never know what you might reel in.  We have had clients catch not only Smallmouth but also Largemouth, Walleye, Spotted Bass, Rainbow, Brook, Brown, Yellow Perch, Red Eye Bass and we have even had several clients hook into Muskie, which is an extremely rare thing to do in this area.  Dan ended up with close to 25 smallies, a couple of spotted bass and redeye bass and a few trout including the little rainbow pictured below.

Dan with a 21" Rainbow on the Lower Tuckasegee

Yesterday, I did another float with Dan C. on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  It was an extremely wet day but the river stayed clear all day and Dan caught close to 35 trout.  Several rainbows in the 15-16″ range were brought to the net.  Aside from one ofter boat on the water we were the only ones on the river which is a rare thing in the month of May.

Nice Tuckasegee Smallmouth

Our guides are some of the best in the business and we run more smallie trips on the Tuckasegee and Little Tennessee than any other guide or outfitter in the area.  We offer seven different sections to float on the lower Tuckasegee alone.  If you are looking to be put on some big bass, call or email us.  We offer wade and float trips for bass through mid to late October.    828-587-HOOK   hookersflyshop@yahoo.com

Guided Fly Fishing on the Tuckasegee River

It has been a busy week at Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service.  The weather has been wonderful and the fishing has been fantastic.  Tim Sheehan, started the week out with a 3/4 day trip for two on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  He reported a fairly productive day but the water was a little high and hard to wade in some areas.

Clint Holcomb and I have also been out several times this week, with trips on the Tuckasegee River and the West Fork of the Pigeon.   Yesterday, we guided a two boat, 3/4 day float for a great group of guys who all grew up here in the Sylva area.  We put in at the Hwy 107 bridge and quickly got into some fish.  Each boat brought around 20-30 fish to the net including one grand slam.  Hot flies of the day were #8 Olive Hot Head Marvins with #14 Rainbow Warrior droppers and #8 Brown Hot Head Marvins with #14 Rainbow Prince droppers.  #8 Olive and Black Wooly Buggers were pretty hot too.

Today, I guided Scott and Chris from Nashville, TN and Raleigh, NC on a half day wade on the Tuck.  The day started off overcast with some light showers.  There was a midge and a sporadic Little Yellow Stonefly hatch in the early-mid morning.  Scott nymph fished all day and picked up over 20 fish on #8 Olive and Black Hot Head Marvins with a #14 Rainbow Warrior dropper.  Chris had a lot of success early in the morning with a #8 Olive Wooly Bugger.  He switched over to a #12 Tungsten Flashabou Nymph with a #16 Just Add Water dropper and picked up several nice rainbows and a few decent brook trout.  Chris also picked up a few fish on a #14 Para Adams around mid day.  Overall it has been a fantastic week on the water with some great company and new friends.  If you are interested in a guided wade or float trip on the Tuckasegee River feel free to send us an email or call.  We are currently floating for Trout and Smallmouth Bass on both the Lower Tuckasegee and the Little Tennessee.  hookersflyshop@yahoo.com   828-587-HOOK

Today, Clint and I had trips out on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest and the West Fork of the Pigeon Delayed Harvest.  Clint had a half day float trip on the Tuck and reports that they brought over 30 fish to the boat.  Hot flies were #6-8 Black/Olive Hot Head Marvins, #14 Pearl Lightning Bugs and #12-14 Rainbow Prince Nymphs.

I guided a 3/4 day wade trip on the West Fork for Matt and Kristen from Orlando, Fl.  Matt and Kristen brought plenty of fish to the net including several nice browns a few rainbows and a good number of brookies.  Kristen even got the grand slam on her last fish of the day.  Most fish were taken on #8 Brown Hot Head Marvins and a few fish were taken on a #12 Flashabou Nymph dropper and a #16 Red Just Add Water dropper.  Kristen also picked up a few on the dry fly Goldie Hawn (little yellow stone).

If you are interested in a trip on one of these fine rivers or any other river or stream in the Western North Carolina area please contact us.  We will be happy to guide you on your next fly fishing adventure.  We also offer wade and float trips for Smallmouth Bass and overnight back country trips to the Smokies  828-587-HOOK  hookersflyshop@yahoo.com

Guided Fly Fishing on the Nantahala River

Big Nantahala Brown

Today, I guided Tom and Ben on the Delayed Harvest section of the Nantahala River.  It was good to be back on the water after a few days of blown out streams.  There were plenty of fish brought to the net including a 17″ Rainbow and a 17-18″ Brown.  Ben put a brand new TFO BVK 10′ 3wt nymphing rod to good use today, and it handled the big fish with ease.  Most fish were taken on #8 Black/Olive Hot Head Marvins and a #6 Cream/Brown UV Dubbed Bottom Roller with a hot orange hot spot.  A few fish were taken on a #14 Tungsten Rainbow Warrior.  The big fish pictured above gave Ben the grand slam for the day.

If you are interested in a guided trip on this stream or any other stream in the Western North Carolina area please give us a call or email.  We will be happy to guide you on your next fly fishing adventure.
