Fly Fishing Wade and Float Trips on the Tuckasegee River

Bill with a nice Brook Trout-Float Trip with Hookers Fly Shop 3-24-12

Busy weekend here at Hookers Fly Shop.  Today, Tim and I both had trips out on the Tuckasegee River.  Tim guided Cara F. on a half day wade and I guided David and Bill on a half day float trip.  The threat of thunderstorms had us worried early in the morning but the skies quickly cleared and it turned out to be a beautiful day on the water.

Tim reports that his trip had success early in the morning with a dry dropper rig with an Elk Hair Caddis with a red midge dropper. Other hot flies included #8 Hot Head Marvins and Caddis Pupa.  Bill and David had pretty good success with Marvins as well and also Olive and Black Wooly Buggers.  Both David and Bill got the Tuck Grand Slam and Bill even landed several decent fish including the Brook trout pictured above.  Throughout the day there was a decent Caddis hatch as well a decent Sulphur hatch.

The March Float Trip special (15% off any March 2012 Float Trip) will run through the 31st and we still have availability for this week so book your trip now.  Our smallmouth float trips should be heating up soon so now is the time to book this very popular late spring and summer trip.  We offer 1/2, 3/4 and full day floats on the Lower Tuckasegee and the Little Tennessee.  All equipment is provided on all of our trips and you can either fly fish or spinner fish.  We also provide drinks and snacks on half day trips and lunch on all 3/4 and full day float trips.

Guided Fly Fishing on the Tuckasegee River

What a spectacular day to be on the water here in Western North Carolina.  The weather is absolutely breathtaking, the fish are biting, bugs are hatching and we are beginning to see various blooms and leaves on the trees.  Spring is definitely here.

Today, I guided Sarah and Diedre on a 3/4 day wade trip on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest and Sarah’s father John tagged along as well.  The young ladies are in from Oklahoma and enjoying their spring break vacation here in the mountains.  We started out on South River Rd. and found success almost as soon as we stepped into the water.  Both Sarah and Diedre landed several nice brook trout and rainbows, while John picked a few bows and a brown.  Sarah was rigged up with a #8 Olive/Brown Hot Head Marvin with a #16 Just Add Water dropper and she fished the a deeper runs while Diedre was working the shallow riffles with a dry dropper, #14 Para Adams with a #16 Just Add Water.   Diedre picked up four or five nice rainbows on the Just Add Water in a span of 9-10 minutes.

For the afternoon we decided to move down to North River Rd. just above Carol’s Cabins.  Sarah picked up several more rainbows on the #16 Just Add Water and one or two on the Marvin while Diedre picked up one or two more brook trout.   John even picked up one or two on a dry fly.  Another perfect day on the water with beautiful weather and great company.  This is why we love doing what we do.

If you are interested in a wade or float trip with us please feel free to email or call and check our availability.  We have several dates already booked up so book in advance to have a better shot at getting the day you want.

Fly Fishing in Western North Carolina

Karl B. working a run on the Tuckasegee DH

It’s been a busy week here at Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service.  We have had several trips out on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest and a ton of customers coming into the shop.  Our flies have been flying off shelves (all pun intended).  Trip booking for March, April and May have been strong and we are excited about the upcoming spring season.  New gear has been arriving over the last week  and our remaining spring orders will be arriving over the next few weeks.  We have plans to add a new Rod company and Reel company to our lineup so be on the lookout.

Happy Clients with Hookers Fly Shop

As I mentioned before we have been extremely busy guiding new and repeat clients on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail and surrounding areas.  Yesterday, I guided repeat client Karl B. and his brother Gary on a 3/4 wade trip on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  The day started out pretty good with several brook and rainbows brought to the net.  As we fished into the afternoon the bite seemed to slow.  However, Karl and Gary both added several more rainbows and brook trout and Gary landed two browns to give him the Tuckasegee Grand Slam (Rainbow, Brook & Brown).  Most fish were taken on #8 Hot Head Marvins (olive/black) and several were taken on olive and black Wooly Buggers.

Today, Clint and I had a group of four anglers from the Charlotte area.  I guided Steff and Alan on a section of the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest along South River Rd.  Alan landed several fish just minutes into the trip and ended up with the grand slam with his first three fish of the day.  Steff worked hard for her first fish but it was well worth it when she hooked into a beautiful 14-15 inch brook trout.  She ended up with several more bows and brook trout.  This was Steff’s first trip on a larger stream and only her 2nd or 3rd time fly fishing.  Overall she did exceptionally well.  Clint’s trip also had a great day and ended up hooking into not one but two fish over 20 inches.  The first fish was a huge rainbow pushing 25 inches.  The second fish was a beautiful 22 inch brown.  Hot flies of the day were #8 Hot Head Marvins (brown and olive/brown), Rainbow Prince Nymphs and several junkfood patterns (i.e. eggs, Squirmy Wormy & Pink San Juan Worms).  What a way to spend the weekend:  beautiful weather, hungry fish and some great company on the water.

Fly Fishing Float Trips on the Tuckasegee River

Zach with a nice Rainbow on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest

Aside from the couple of thunderstorms today was a great day on the water.  I guided Bob and his son-in-law Zach on a full day float trip on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  Zach just got in from the Australia and Bob is up from Jacksonville Fl.   Both Bob and Zach ended the day with a Tuck Grand Slam and Zach got the ultimate slam by adding a smallmouth bass to the mix.  The flow was low and was perfect for the couple of dozen wading anglers on the South River Rd. section.  Hot flies of the day were the #8 Hot Head Marvin with a #12 Rainbow Prince dropper.

If you are looking to get away from the crowded areas South River Rd. try the North River Rd. section.  Our guides have been reporting some high catch totals and big fish down in this area.  Lookout for and respect all private property but remember as long as you can wade to it the river is open to everyone.

Fly Fishing the Tuckasegee River

Today, I guided my good friend and repeat client Manny T. from Greenville, SC.  Manny had a fantastic day on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest and was just a brown trout shy of the Tuck Grand Slam.  He landed some very nice bows and so many brook trout I lost count somewhere close to 20.  This was my 8th or 9th time guiding many and as always it was a blast and a fantastic day on the water.

Big Brook Trout on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest

Hot flies of the day were #8 Hot Head Marvins with a #14 Rainbow Prince Tungsten dropper fished under and indicator and Euro Nymph style.  With the East and West fork both off today we also fished a dry dropper #14 Para Adams with a #16 Just Add Water, which landed a hand full of fish as well.

Full Day Float Trip tomorrow on the Delayed Harvest.  If the t-storms hold off it looks to be another beautiful day in Western North Carolina.

Fly Fishing the Nantahala River

Beautiful Wild Male Rainbow on the Nantahala River

Today, I met my clients near Robbinsville, NC and we made a short drive up to the Nantahala Delayed Harvest.  Scott and Michael had never fished the Nantahala before today and they are already talking about coming back.  Scott had the best day with more than 20 fish brought to the net including some really nice rainbows and brook trout.  Michael may not have brought as many to the net but he did get the Nantahala grand slam (rainbow, brook and brown).  I talked Scott into trying a Czech Nymphing setup and he quickly found out just how productive it can be.  He and Michael both had just fished a run and failed to pull out any fish.  With the first cast of the Czech Nymph rig he was hooked into a nice 14-15 inch bow.  He fished a Tungsten #12 Flashabou Prince Nymph with a #8 Hot Head Marvin and a #16 Just Add Water on an 15-16′ leader.   Most of the fish came on the Prince Nymph while several fish came on the Hot Head Marvin.

Scott showing off a decent bow on the Nantahala

Around midday we started seeing mayflies and caddis flies hatching and several fish rising to them.  We switched our rigs over to a Dry Fly Dropper and pulled in even more fish on dries.  Once they switched over to the dry fly dropper, Scott and Michael picked up several nice wild rainbows and a few more brook trout.

Today, I was constantly reminded of why I chose guiding as my profession.  The scenic surroundings, the abundance of hungry trout and great company made for a fantastic day on the water.

If you are interested in fishing this fine river give us a call or email.  We guide this stream and many others all over Western North Carolina.  Let our patient experienced guides take you on your next fly fishing adventure.

Fly Fishing the Tuckasegee River Delayed Harvest

Jadon all smiles after landing a nice rainbow.

Today, was an excellent day of fly fishing on the Tuckasegee River with my son Jadon.  Nothing brings a smile to my face quicker than seeing my son’s excitement when he hooks into a nice trout.  Today was definitely filled with plenty of smiles and great memories for us both.  At only seven years of age, Jadon has caught more fish on the fly than I had by age 16.  He surprises me more and more with each outing.

Jadon fighting a nice rainbow on the Tuckasegee River

After being beat to one of my big fish honey holes by another angler we decided to fish near the top section of the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest on South River Rd.  I decided to tie on a dry fly dropper rig with a #14 Para Adams and a #16 Just Add Water and Jadon went with a #8 Hot Head Marvin (Black and Olive).  I quickly landed 5-6 fish on the Para Adams and several fish on the Just Add Water while Jadon hooked into several fish with the Hot Head Marvin.

I decided to spend the last hour of the trip taking photos and videos of Jadon landing fish after fish after fish.  With the Tuckasegee River getting a recent stocking of close to 10,000 fish the fishing has been extremely hot.

The river has been very wader friendly for the past week or so with the flows from the generation reaching the delayed harvest section after 3pm.  Look for that to possilby change if we have any significant rain from this next storm system coming in tonight and tomorrow morning.  You can visit the Duke Energy website or click the link provided on our home page.

Like us on Facebook to view more photos and videos of our latest Fly Fishing Adventures.  We will be guiding all weekend so check back for another update on Sat. evening or Sun. morning.

Fly Fish the Tuckasegee River

Nice Brook on the Tuck

Today, I had the pleasure of Guiding Jeff B. from Cullowhee, NC.  It was Jeff”s first time on a guided trip and only his 2nd or 3rd fly fishing.  We started the morning out with some basic casting instruction, which covered the overhead cast, roll cast and side-arm cast.  Jeff quickly got the hang of each cast so we decided to drive down to the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest section.  This section was recently stocked with close to 10,000 fish and it was just a few casts later that Jeff was hooked up with his first fish of the day.  He ended up landing 14-15 fish including the big brook trout pictured above.  Jeff even ended the day with a Tuckasegee Grand Slam (Rainbow, Brook and Brown).  Hot flies of the day were Black and Olive Wooly Buggers, #8 Hot Head Marvins and #10-12 B.H. Prince Nymphs.

Western North Carolina Fly Shop and Guide Service

Wild Rainbow caught and released on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail

Hookers Fly Shop is located in the heart of WNC surrounded by some of the most scenic streams in the US.  Our shop and guide service is located in Downtown Sylva, which happens to be in the center of the world famous WNC Fly Fishing Trail.  Here you can easily access over 15 hot spots, which include 22 streams and rivers that are listed on the trail.  Some streams are just a few minutes away while other more remote streams are 30-40 mins away.  Check out our destinations page to read more about the WNC Fly Fishing Trail.

Beautiful Wild Brown caught and released in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Our shop is also conveniently located near the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Reservation including the Raven Fork Trophy Waters.  Our trip leader, Jason Cole, grew up fishing the Smokies and the Cherokee area but now calls Sylva his home.   If you are looking for a 1/2, 3/4 or full day trip to the Smokies or Cherokee just ask for Jason.  He also runs our backcountry trips to remote areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as many Nantahala and Pisgah National Forest destinations.  Jason has over 30 years experience in backcountry wilderness settings.  He has a degree in Outdoor Leadership and he is Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified.

Hookers Fly Shop is also conveniently located just two miles from the wade and float sections of the Tuckasegee River Delayed Harvest.  Between Oct. and early June you can find our guides leading wade and float trips down this section of river.  It would be hard to find guides that spend more time on this river than us.  With three boats in our lineup we can offer up to three float trips each day for up to six anglers.  The river boasts the heaviest stocking of all the NC Delayed Harvest Streams and will not disappoint.  This section of river is easy enough for the beginning angler and it will even challenge the most avid fly fishermen and women.  While many other hatchery supported streams close during the month of March the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest remains open all year.   However, the best fly fishing is done between the first week of Oct. and the first week of June.  The first Sat. in June the river will lose its catch and release restrictions and open for harvest.

*Remember that all Hatchery Supported Waters (marked by the green and white signs) are closed the month of March and reopen the first Sat. in April.*

Nice Smallie on a Float Trip on the Lower Tuckasegee River

Our guided service also offers guided wade or float Smallmouth trips on the Tuckasegee River and the Little Tennessee River.  These trips are a favorite among anglers in the Spring, Summer and early Fall.  While it is nice catching wild trout or big 25-30 inch stocked trout you will not find a harder fitting fish pound for pound than the Smallmouth Bass.  We have had clients catch these bad boys in the 6 pound range.  It is not uncommon to take one of our floats and catch 25 or more of these wonderful fish.   Also, on these trips you will likely hook into Rainbow and Brown trout as well as big walleye.  Perch and red-eye bass are also caught on these trips along with the occasional muskie.

Here is a list of areas that we guide:

Cherokee including the Raven Fork Trophy Section, Nantahala River, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, WNC Fly Fishing Trail, Pigeon River including East and West Fork and Middle Prong, Tuckasegee River, Little Tennessee River, Cullasaja, Whitewater, Chattooga, Davidson River, North Shore of Fontana Lake including Hazel Creek, Forney Creek and Eagle Creek, Scott Creek, Gatlinburg and Cades Cove areas and many more.

Fly Fishing the Tuckasegee River

Beautiful Wild Bow on the Tuck

Not a bad day on the Tuck today.  I landed around 24 fish including two browns and one brook to give me the grand slam for the day.  Cris Weatherford on the other hand couldn’t keep them off his hooks.  He landed well over 30 fish including some fat 15-17inchers.  I was using a dry fly dropper rig with a #14 Para Blue Wing Olive with a #14 Rainbow Warrior dropper and a #16 Just Add Water (Polar UV Dubbed Pheasant Tail variation).  All but one fish came on the Just Add Water.   Remember that it is a good idea to use all barbless flies or crush your barbs when you are on the Tuckasegee Delayed Harvest.  This section of river remains catch and release until the first Saturday in June.  When using barbless hooks you may end up losing a fish or two but that is much better than over stressing and possibly killing them.

Wild Brown on the Tuck

It is hard to believe that in less than two weeks the Tuck will receive another stocking of close to 10,000 trout.  If it is fishing as good as it is right now March should be EPIC!    The stocking usually takes place on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of the month or the first Wednesday or Thursday.  We will be sure to keep you guys and gals updated as to what day they stock.
