Nantahala Fly Fishing Guides

Fly Fishing the Nantahala River

Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service offers guided fly fishing on the upper and lower section of the Nanatahala.  Many of our guided trips on this river are in the Nantahala Delayed Harvest Section.  This section is more wader friendly than the lower section.  For the more experienced anglers the lower Nantahala offers some of the best fishing in the area.  Many big rainbows and browns roam these waters.  The Nantahala River is known the world over for its great white water action, and is a place that truly exemplifies a great trout river.

Beautiful Nantahala Rainbow.

The Nantahala is listed as one of the nation’s top 100 by Trout Unlimited. It has also been featured in Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine, North Carolina Sportsman, Trout Magazine, and countless others. The Nantahala River is the most diverse fishery in all of the state. It is arguably one of the finest rivers in the South Eastern United States. Nowhere else can you fish so many different types of water in the same river system! From tight Mountain Laurel choked headwaters, laden with Brook Trout, to a very impressive tailwater supporting some of the baddest Brown Trout in the state, the Nantahala has something for every taste.

Beautiful Wild Male Rainbow on the Nantahala River

Beautiful Wild Male Rainbow on the Nantahala River

The Nantahala above the power house is designated Delayed Harvest, this is a favorite among anglers because of the great action year round, and high fish counts. One can catch numerous stocked trout as well as wild trout, the excitement in this particular section is endless. Below the power house the river changes faces once again to an impressive tailwater fishery. This is the section of the river where the world class white water rafting and kayaking take place. The fishing is great year round in this section too, even during the summer months when the rafting is going on. The Nantahala here features many deep pools, numerous runs and riffles that hold truly large trout. Matter of fact the North Carolina State Record Brown Trout came from this portion of the Nantahala, weighing in over 24lbs 10 oz!  Talk about putting a smile on your face!   The Nantahala River is truly a place worth visiting while in Western North Carolina.

Cherokee Fly Fishing Guides

While we specialize in fly fishing on the Cherokee Trophy section we also offer spin fishing trips on other areas of the Cherokee Waters including Soco Creek, Oconaluftee River and Upper Ravens Fork.

photo 2

The nearby Oconaluftee River flows out of the Smoky Mountains National Park through beautiful historic Cherokee N. C. home to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. The Oconaluftee River is a freestone river that begins life high up in the Smoky Mountains National Park. Many small feeder streams make up this beautiful river, to form one of the largest rivers that flows inside park boundaries.

Once outside the park, the “Luftee” as us locals refer to it, flows inside the Qualla Boundary where it’s waters are stocked with numerous healthy Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout.  The Cherokee Indians are long know for taking care of their natural resources, and the Oconoluftee is no exception. The Tribe stocks the Oconoluftee River and other streams located on the Qualla Boundary twice a week, so there is no shortage on trout in the waters of the Oconoluftee. The Tribe does offer fishing permits, and the daily creel limit is 10 fish with no size restriction. The previous North Carolina State Record Brown Trout came from the waters of the Luftee weighing in at 15 lbs 9oz!

The relatively new designation of the Cherokee Catch and Release waters on the Raven Fork offer yet another wonderful fishing opportunity. Fish average about 20 inches on this 2.2 mile stretch of water. Managed by Cherokee Fish and Game, the regulations are different from the state of North Carolina. Please be sure to visit out Regulations tab for more information.

Hookers Fly Shop Owner and Guide Jason Cole with a beautiful Ravens Fork Rainbow.

Our lead guide, Jason Cole, is a member of the Eastern Band of Cheorkee Indians.  Growing up in Cherokee, Jason  has been fishing these waters since he was a young kid.  He has a vast knowledge of the 30 miles of streams located on the Cherokee Reservation.  From the smaller streams of Bunches Creek and Soco Creek to the larger streams of Raven Fork and the Oconaluftee, Jason has fished these waters for over 30 years.  He has also guided hundreds of clients on these waters over the past 11 seasons.  It would be tough to find a more experienced guide for these waters.

Outside of the trophy waters on Ravens Fork Cherokee has close to 30 more miles of stream to choose from.  From the smallest stream, Bunches Creek to Soco Creek and the Lower Oconaluftee.  Our guides cover all of these areas on our 1/2, 3/4 and full day trips.

Guided Fly Fishing trips in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the Southeast.  However, the fishing here can be extremely frustrating for most anglers but at the same time it can very rewarding.

photo 1 (6)

Avery with a nice lake run brown on Hazel Creek.

There are dozens of streams in the Smokies and most of them are home to Rainbow, Brook and Brown trout.  Some of the lower elevation streams even hold smallmouth bass.  While a few of the streams have all three species of trout there are a few of the higher elevation streams that only have the Brook Trout or “Specks” as most of us locals like to call them.  In fact, the brook trout that are found in these mountains are unique only to the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  These fish tend to be much smaller than the more well known Northern Brook.  This beautiful specimen is the only native trout to the area.  Pictured below is a beautiful Southern Appalachian Brook Trout from Straight Fork, which is located just north of Cherokee, NC.

On our guided fly-fishing trips in the Smokies you can do a half-day, ¾ day or a full day trip.   All of these trips are wade trips and we provide all the necessary gear for a day in the Smokies.  Full day fly fishing trips in the Smokies also include a stream side lunch.

Fly Fishing Trips on Ravens Fork in Cherokee NC

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of guiding longtime clients Scott B. and Dwayne H. from Charlotte, NC.  Every time I am out on the water with these guys it is a fun, and usually a very productive, day.  Yesterday was no different.  They also brought along beginner fly fisher Brett for his first ever guided trip and his 2nd time on the water.

photo 5 (2)

Bugs were everywhere today. BWOs, Little Black Stones and some big Quill Gordons.

These guys always get into big fish when they are here, so we chose the Ravens Fork Trophy Section as our playground for the day.  I began the morning with Brett, teaching him some casting techniques and how to read the water.  He quickly picked up the roll cast, and not long after, his first fish on the fly.  Pictured below is a 19″ bow that took a #16 Just Add Water Nymph that I had tied up the night before.  This is by far one of my favorite nymphs to throw.  It is extremely effective in low light conditions, most likely due to the Brown UV collar.   Click here to purchase Just Add Water Nymphs.

photo 5

Brett with his first ever trout on the fly. This pic was taken on a #16 Just Add Water Nymph tied on Syndicate Hooks.

As the morning went on Brett got several more strikes but none in the net.  Scott and Dwayne went off on their own, and we later met them down near the confluence of Ravens Fork and the Oconaluftee.  Scott had picked up a couple rainbows, and Dwayne had also gotten one in the net.  The area began to get covered up with anglers and other guides so we drove upriver and got in.

It wasn’t long before Brett reeled in another big beautiful bow.  This fish decided to eat a #8 Black and Coffee Hot Head Marvin and put up one hell of a fight.  Even though it was Brett’s first day fly fishing, he looked like a seasoned pro when fighting and getting these fish in the net.

photo 4

Brett with another beautiful Ravens Fork Rainbow.

Not to be out done by newbie Brett, Scott stepped in the water and soon pulls in a huge bow of his own.  Scott’s only word when hooking into this fish was, “Pig!”

photo 3

Unfortunately this picture doesn’t do this fish justice. This was probably the biggest fish of the day.

As the day started winding down, Brett and I left the field hole and went down to the bridge, just above the high school.  Most of the runs and pockets were washed out here due to high water, but we spotted one area that looked like to could hold a monster.  After about a dozen or so casts into this pool, Brett’s line went tight and the fight was on.  This would turn out to be Brett’s biggest fish of the day.
