Fly Fishing Trips for kids in Western North Carolina

Over the past couple of weeks we have had the pleasure of sharing our wonderful sport with several groups of young children and young teenagers.  Seeing a child catch his or her first fish on the fly is a truly rewarding experience.

Eight year old Savannah with a nice rainbow taken on a #14 Yellow Stimulator.

During the summer months we target many of the small streams in the area.  These streams provide a fun and safe environment for young children to learn the basics of fly fishing.  We provide waders and boots for youngsters as well as smaller rods for smaller hands.

We recommend 1/2 or 3/4 day trips for younger children but full day trips are always on option.  All equipment is provided on all of our trips at no additional cost.

Guided Fly Fishing Trips near Asheville, NC

Over the past few weeks we have been fishing and guiding on many of the small streams in the area.  We have been all over the Smokies including more remote areas like Hazel Creek and Forney Creek.  The Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail has also been a favorite of ours on streams like Scotts Creek, West Fork of the Tuckasegee, Caney Fork, Mull Creek, Piney Mountain Creek and more.

Eight year old Darby with a fine small stream rainbow.

We have been seeing some good hatches of Little Yellow Stoneflies, Light Cahills and Sulphurs with plenty of eager fish picking dry flies off the surface.  The better dry fly action has been in the mornings and late afternoon and evening hours.  We have also been fishing a lot of dry dropper rigs and nymphs rigs with great success.  Hot nymphs have been #14-16 Flashback Pheasant Tails, #14-16 Orange Thread Frenchies, #14-16 Rainbow Warriors, #12-14 Olive and Natural Hares Ear Walts Worms, #10-14 Green Weenies and other various inchworm patterns, #10-14 Pink Barbie, #14-18 Quasimodo Pheasant Tails and more.

Small Stream Guided Trips in Western North Carolina

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of guided John M. and his son John from Asheville, NC.  The younger John is studying here at Western Carolina University for the summer and wanted to learn the small trout streams near campus.

John with a very nice small stream brown trout. June 2014

Around 30 minutes into the trip John hooked into the huge brown pictured above.  After an epic 7-8 min battle we finally got her in the net.  We snapped a few pictures and slowly worked with her until she could swim away on her own.  Hopefully someone will have the chance to catch this beautiful trout again in the future which is the beauty of catch and release practices.

Beautiful Wild Brown June 2014

Both father and son went on to put several more fish in the net throughout the afternoon.   Late in the afternoon we had to cut the trip a little short due to a Thunderstorm.  Overall it was a fantastic day on the water with some great company.  We look forward to guiding these guys again in the near future.

Fishing Trips in the Great Smoky Mountains

Guided Fly Fishing trips in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the Southeast.  However, the fishing here can be extremely frustrating for most anglers but at the same time it can very rewarding.

Overnight Backcountry Trip on Hazel Creek June 2014

There are dozens of streams in the Smokies and most of them are home to Rainbow, Brook and Brown trout.  Some of the lower elevation streams even hold smallmouth bass.

Catching wild Brookies

Catching wild Brookies

While a few of the streams have all three species of trout there are a few of the higher elevation streams that only have the Brook Trout or “Specks” as most of us locals like to call them.  In fact, the brook trout that are found in these mountains are unique only to the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  These fish tend to be much smaller than the more well known Northern Brook.  This beautiful specimen is the only native trout to the area.  Pictured below is a beautiful Southern Appalachian Brook Trout from Straight Fork, which is located just north of Cherokee, NC.

On our guided fly-fishing trips in the Smokies you can do a half-day, ¾ day or a full day trip.   All of these trips are wade trips and we provide all the necessary gear for a day in the Smokies.  Full day fly fishing trips in the Smokies also include a stream side lunch.

Tuckasegee Float Trips for Fly Fishing

It has been a busy couple of weeks here at Hookers Fly Shop and Guide Service.  Our wade trips have been really great with the lower flows on the Tuck but the floats have been the best.  Today, Clint and I guided the lower section of the delayed harvest and put our clients on close to 100 fish between three anglers.  Not a bad day on the water.  Hot flies were #8 Marvin Stoneflies, #14 Frenchies, #16 Rainbow Warriors and #16 Soft Hackles.

Longtime repeat client Chuck G. with a very nice Tuckaegee Rainbow May 2014.

The smallmouth bite on the Tuckasegee is really beginning to pick up as well.  We have picked up several decent smallies in the delayed harvest over the past week.  Today, Chuck G. got the Ultimate Tuckasegee Grand Slam (Brown, Brook, Rainbow and a Smallmouth Bass).  The big brookies, rainbows, browns and smallmouth all came on a #8 Olive/Black Tungsten Marvin Stonefly.

Fly Fishing Guides for Cherokee NC

Guided fly fishing and spin fishing trips in Cherokee, NC.

The nearby Oconaluftee River flows out of the Smoky Mountains National Park through beautiful historic Cherokee N. C. home to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. The Oconaluftee River is a freestone river that begins life high up in the Smoky Mountains National Park. Many small feeder streams make up this beautiful river, to form one of the largest rivers that flows inside park boundaries.

Jalen with a massive rainbow on the Cherokee Trophy Section

Jalen with a massive rainbow on the Cherokee Trophy Section

Once outside the park, the “Luftee” as us locals refer to it, flows inside the Qualla Boundary where it’s waters are stocked with numerous healthy Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout. The Cherokee Indians are long know for taking care of their natural resources, and the Oconoluftee is no exception. The Tribe stocks the Oconoluftee River and other streams located on the Qualla Boundary twice a week, so there is no shortage on trout in the waters of the Oconoluftee. The Tribe does offer fishing permits, and the daily creel limit is 10 fish with no size restriction. The previous North Carolina State Record Brown Trout came from the waters of the Luftee weighing in at 15 lbs 9oz!

Releasing a beautiful rainbow on Ravens Fork.

The relatively new designation of the Cherokee Catch and Release waters on the Raven Fork offer yet another wonderful fishing opportunity. Fishaverage about 20 inches on this 2.2 mile stretch of water. Managed by Cherokee Fish and Game, the regulations are different from the state of North Carolina. Please be sure to visit out Regulations tab for more information.

Hookers Fly Shop guide Jason Cole with a big Ravens Fork Rainbow Spring 2014

Our lead guide, Jason Cole, is a member of the Eastern Band of Cheorkee Indians.  Growing up in Cherokee, Jason  has been fishing these waters since he was a young kid.  He has a vast knowledge of the 30 miles of streams located on the Cherokee Reservation.  From the smaller streams of Bunches Creek and Soco Creek to the larger streams of Raven Fork and the Oconaluftee, Jason has fished these waters for over 30 years.  He has also guided hundreds of clients on these waters over the past 9 seasons.  It would be tough to find a more experienced guide for these waters.

Trophy Rainbow

Outside of the trophy waters on Ravens Fork Cherokee has close to 30 more miles of stream to choose from.  From the smallest stream, Bunches Creek to Soco Creek and the Lower Oconaluftee.  Our guides cover all of these areas on our 1/2, 3/4 and full day trips.
